For decades, non-book materials have always been part of
library’s collection especially AV materials. AV items are available in a
variety of format including digital videodiscs, videodiscs, Blu-ray discs,
audio CD and kits. Older format like videocassettes and cassettes are still in
the collection for archiving purposes.
Today, AV items in Tuanku Bainun Library’s collection are
being rebranded into more leisure and entertainment for its users. We hope more
users are coming to the library. Library will not only determine to provide
knowledge but also to ease the mind of users after a long day in the library.
Most of our top selected movies are in DVD or Blu-ray format.
Fortunately, these materials are still available in the market if not all over
Malaysia. However, with the fast technology nowadays, will DVD or Blu-ray
survive?
According to Goldberg (2019), the big player these days is
streaming. For example, Netflix, Amazon, iTunes and others offer a convenient
way to watch your favourite program. However, you have to look closer and find
the imperfections of the streaming. Your viewing desires are at the mercy of
the streaming services. Different providers offer different program! This means
you need subscriptions to all service providers to stream the most popular
recent movies.
Leaving physical media behind is not a new trend. However, if
you wanted special features or the ability to watch movies without depending on
your Internet connection, DVD or Blu-ray disc is the answer. Thanks to them,
we’ve have been able to watch movies when we want and not to wait until they
show up on a streaming service (Vaughan-Nichols, 2019).
PTB’s DVD and Blu-ray collection consists of all types of
category in various languages. Users can watch movie at the viewing area or
just borrow it. Watching movie will definitely bring back the memories
especially old movies. Maybe the recent movie is still a way to come but you
can always count on the library to enjoy the pleasure of watching movies.
